Rebecca May Breaks NAIA Three Point Record
Junior forward Rebecca May is rewriting the women's basketball record book at Berea College (Ky). During Berea's February 9 contest with Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Asbury College (Ky.), May shattered her own single-season mark for points scored. The following day she became the school's career points leader by tallying 24 against Mid-Continent University (Ky.). May has scored 523 points in 26 games this season and 1,432 for her career.
The Waynesburg, Ky. native now has an NAIA National Record to her name. In Berea's 110-89 victory against #15 Bethel College (Tenn.) on February 18, May grabbed the national record for three-point field goals made in a season with her 142nd make. She nips the old record of 141 set last year by Britney Kannady of Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
May had 24 points in the contest as she connected on 5 of 9 three-point attempts. She added four rebounds, and two assists.
May is averaging 20 points per game while playing just 22 minutes for No. 22 Berea. She has taken a school-record 290 three-point shots and has made 129 of them, leading the NAIA.
According to Berea coach Bunky Harkleroad, "Rebecca May is a special athlete. She is one of the most competitive players ever to come through our program."
While May is always dangerous on offense, she's anything but a one-dimensional talent. On the other end of the floor, the 5-9 May leads the Lady Mountaineers in defensive rebounds and blocked shots.
"Rebecca is invaluable to us because she plays very hard and has a tremendous feel for the game," said Harkleroad. Since May enrolled at Berea in 2003, the Lady Mountaineers have recorded three consecutive 20-victory seasons. Before May arrived, the program had never enjoyed a 20-win campaign.
