Women's Results from First Day at KIAC Tournament

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (February 22, 2006) The 2005-06 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) women's basketball tournament started Wednesday afternoon at the Southeast Activities Building on the campus of Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind.

The first day of action featured three women's basketball games. Mid-Continent, Indiana University Southeast and Midway College were winners in the first day of competition. St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Alice Lloyd and Spalding were eliminated from the 2005-06 championship.
Game #1 (4:00 p.m.) No. 9 Mid-Continent vs. No. 8 St. Louis College of Pharmacy

No. 9 Mid-Continent scored the first upset of the tournament in the opening game of the KIAC Women's Basketball Tournament 59-54 in overtime. Mid-Continent (4-19) played excellent defense at the end of regulation to force overtime where they would eventually win. Mid-Continent was led by Sarah Cripps with 24 points, 18 rebounds and seven steals. Beth Jordan also added to the Cougar's attack with 11 points and nine rebounds.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy (4-22) was led by Katie Palmer with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Also playing well for the Eutectics was Melissa Hazelwood who made her presence felt under the basket as she pulled down 13 rebounds while scoring five points.

With the win Mid-Continent advances to quarterfinal action tomorrow where they will play No. 1 Berea at 12:00 noon.

Game #2 (6:00 p.m.) No. 5 Alice Lloyd vs. No. 4 Indiana University Southeast

No. 4 Indiana University Southeast defeated No. 5 Alice Lloyd College on Wednesday night 85-66. Indiana University Southeast (17-12) continued to fight hard throughout the game even when star senior Christina DeMaio went down with an injury with 10:39 left in the second half. Indiana University Southeast maintained its lead (78-61) when DeMaio rejoined the team with three minutes left in the contest.

Indiana University Southeast was lead by DeMaio with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. Kayla Rieckers also played well for the Grenadiers scoring 17 points, four assists along with two steals. Alice Lloyd College (15-16) was led by Whitney Lykens with 25 points, six rebounds and two assists. Kristal Daniels led the Eagles in the rebounding with 14 boards. Amy Jackson also added 10 points for Alice Lloyd.

With the win Indiana University Southeast advances to semifinal action on Friday when they will play the winner of No. 1 Berea vs. No. 9 Mid-Continent at 4:00 PM.

Game #3 (8:00 p.m.) No. 6 Spalding University vs. No. 3 Midway College

No. 3 Midway College advanced in the nightcap to the KIAC semifinals with a win over Spalding University 81-69. Midway's (17-15) shooting from the field help lead them to the victory. The Eagles shot 54.9 percent from the field in the game. Midway was able to overcome 21 turnovers to win the contest over Spalding (9-22).

Midway was led by Natalie Dial who netted 24 points. Danielle Lascoe scored 20 points for the Eagles cause along with Ashley Parker's 14 rebounds. Spalding University was led by Makeshia McGill who led all scorers with 28 points and six rebounds.

Midway College will advance to semifinal play on Friday and face the winner of No. 2 Bethel and No. 7 Asbury at 2:00 p.m.
