Men's Results from first day at KIAC Tournament

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (February 23, 2006) The 2005-06 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) men's basketball tournament started Thursday afternoon at the Southeast Activities Building on the campus of Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind.

The first day of action featured four men's basketball games. Bethel College, Spalding University, Berea and Indiana University Southeast were winners in the first day of competition. Alice Lloyd, Mid-Continent, Asbury and St. Louis College of Pharmacy were eliminated from the 2005-06 championship.

Game #1 (2:00 p.m.) No. 3 Alice Lloyd vs. No. 6 Bethel College

No. 6 Bethel College upset No. 3 Alice Lloyd on Thursday afternoon in the first game of the 2006 KIAC Men's Basketball Championship. Bethel extended their 39-28 halftime lead in the second half to charge into the semifinals.


Bethel (20-11) was led by Thomas Haynes with 21 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. The Wildcat's Aaron Jacques also added 16 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Bethel scored 21 points off of Alice Lloyd turnovers. Bethel shot 36.7 percent from the field in the game and 37.5 percent from behind the arc. Alice Lloyd (17-14) had four scorers in double figures with K.J. Waterman leading the Eagles with 22 points. Rodney Mitchell and Jeremy Daniels scored 11 points respectively for the Eagle's cause. Alice Lloyd shot 36.0 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the arc in the game.

No. 6 Bethel will move to semifinal action on Friday when they will face Spalding at 6:00 p.m.

Game #2 (4:00 p.m.) No. 2 Spalding vs. No. 7 Mid-Continent

No. 2 Spalding advanced to the semifinals with a 92-51 victory over No.7 Mid-Continent. Shooting was the key for Spalding (16-14) as the Pelicans shot 50 percent for the game compared to the 31 percent Mid Continent shot. Spalding's inside presence led them to a 28-14 advantage in the paint.

The Pelicans received help from their bench as 43 of their points came from substitutes. Chad O'Brien came off the bench and led the Spalding attack with 20 points. Chartrea'l Hall led the team in rebounds with seven. Hall also passed for six assists to help the team offensive drive.

Mid Continent (6-24) was led by Courtney Amos with 16 points. Josh Smith posted 13 points and 6 rebounds in the Cougars' performance.

No. 2 Spalding will advance to semifinal play on Friday when they play No. 6 Bethel College at 6:00 p.m.

Game #3 (6:00 p.m.) No. 4 Asbury College vs. No. 5 Berea College

No. 5 Berea won a shooter's dual in a 101-90 contest over No. 4 Asbury. One key to Berea's win was the battle under the basket with 22 points in the paint compared to Asbury's 14. Berea shot 54 percent from the field compared to 47 percent for the Eagles. Berea's eleven point victory included seven points that came off the Eagles 20 turnovers.

The big man on the night for Berea was Chris McIntyre scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds. This marks his 3rd double-double of the season. Jordan Samuels also scored 19 for the Mountaineers.

Asbury ended the evening with four players scoring in double digits combining for 59 points. Asbury's pair of Derek Bland and Ben Spann led the team's scoring with 19 points respectively. Asbury made 13 steals on the night with its heavy defensive pressure.

With the win No. 5 Berea advances to the semifinals against No. 1 Indiana University Southeast on Friday at 8:00 p.m.

Game #4 (8:00 p.m.) No. 1 IU Southeast vs. No. 8 St. Louis College of Pharmacy

No. 1 Indiana University Southeast defeated No. 8 St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Thursday night 75-57. IU Southeast is currently ranked No. 9 in NAIA DII basketball, but trailed to St. Louis College of Pharmacy 32-30 at the half. Indiana University Southeast would find their shooting touch in the second half as they regained the lead for good with 8:09 left in the contest.

Indiana University Southeast (28-3) was led by Nick Guilinger with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brent Houin and Robert Daniels also posted double-digits in the contest. The Grenadiers earned 17 steals in the contest and scored 34 points off St. Louis College of Pharmacy turnovers.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy (7-16) was led by Jake Knepp who netted 20 points. Jake Dallas scored 16 points for the Eutectics' cause. IU Southeast will advance to semifinal action on Friday when they play No. 5 Berea College at 8:00 p.m.
