Women's Results from KIAC Tournament Semifinals

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (February 24, 2006) The 2006 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) women's basketball tournament continued on Friday at the Southeast Activities Building on the campus of Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind.

The third day of action featured two semifinal women's basketball games. Bethel College and Berea won on Thursday advancing to Saturday's championship game while Midway and Indiana University Southeast were eliminated from the 2005-06 championship.

Semifinal #1 (2:00 p.m.) No. 3 Midway vs. No. 2 Bethel College

No. 2 Bethel College defeated No. 3 Midway on Friday afternoon to advance to Saturday's KIAC Women's Championship game. The Wildcats defeated the Eagles 78-73. The game was highly contested with four ties and seven lead changes.

Bethel (27-4) was led by Whitney Baird with 25 points and nine rebounds. Dani Howard also contributed 24 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats who are ranked No. 16 in this week's NAIA DII women's basketball poll. Bethel outscored Midway under the basket 32-22. Bethel shot 46.2 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the arc in the contest.

Midway (17-16) was led by Natalie Dial with 14 points and four rebounds. Danielle Lascoe also turned in a solid performance for the Eagles scoring 13 points while dishing out two assists. Midway shot 30 of 65 from the field for 44.6 percent and 4 of 12 from behind the arc for 46.2 percent.

Bethel advances to the championship game on Saturday when they compete with No. 1 seed Berea College for the 2006 conference crown.

Semifinal #2 (4:00 p.m.) No. 4 IU Southeast vs. No. 1 Berea College

No. 1 Berea College defeated Indiana University Southeast on Friday to advance to Saturday's KIAC Women's Championship game. The Mountaineers defeated the Grenadiers 77-57 in the second semifinal game of the day.

Berea (25-5) was led by Candy Walls who netted 16 points and nine rebounds. Sarah Hughes also added 13 points along with nine rebounds for the Mountaineers. Two other Berea players combined for 20 points in the contest. Berea shot 28 of 88 from the field for 31.8 percent and 11 of 46 from behind the arc for 23.9 percent.

Indiana University Southeast was led by KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year Christina DeMaio with 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Brittany Caple also added 12 points for the Grenadiers who finish their season with a record of 17-13. The Grenadiers shot 21 of 71 from the field for 29.6 percent and 4 of 20 from behind the arc for 20.0 percent.

Berea College advances to the championship game on Saturday when they compete with No. 2 seed Bethel College for the 2006 conference crown.
