Berea wins the KIAC Women's Basketball Championship
Berea Women will represent KIAC at National Tournament.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (February 24, 2007) No. 3 Berea College defeated No. 1 Alice Lloyd College for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship 88-85 on Saturday. Berea hung on despite late free throw misses and a final opportunity for Alice Lloyd after a Berea made free throw.
Alice Lloyd got off to a fast 9-2 run to start the game. Berea came back into the game as the first half progressed and tied the score at 27 on a Jenna Lowe three pointer. Berea went on an 11-4 run to close the half up 48-40.
Alice Lloyd scored eight unanswered points midway through the second half to get back to within one at 70-69. Alice Lloyd would pull even with Berea at 77 with just under five minutes left. Both teams traded three pointers and free throws to the very end.
Berea's (22-7) Rebecca May had 30 points to led all scorers in the game. May combined with Candy Walls for nine rebounds each. Jenna Lowe also topped scoring efforts on the Mountaineers team with 12.
Alice Lloyd's (16-12) advantage came on the boards. KIAC All Conference Player of the Year Becky Thomas had 21 rebounds for the game. Her 25 points also kept the team close late. Kaylan Richardson threw home 21 points for the Eagles. Chasity Fox kept the ball moving with her nine assists.
Berea's win gives them an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Championship on March 7-13, 2007 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa
