Spalding Men's Basketball wins First Round at National Tournament
Spalding University upsets No. 3 seeded Point Park (Pa.) University.LOUISVILLE, Ky. (February 24, 2007) Spalding University upset Nationally Ranked and No. 3 seeded Point Park (Pa.) University on Thursday in the First Round of the NAIA Division II National Basketball Championship 78-63. Spalding's victory marks time a No. 3 seed has fallen in the First Round of the tournament since 1999 (Bluefield (Va.) d. No. 3 Southern Oregon 88-87).
Spalding (20-13) hung tight through most of the first half as neither team led by more than 5 during the first half. Midway through the second half the Golden Eagles opened up a 14-2 run to get ahead by 10. Point Park would narrow the game to three with less than four minutes before Spalding would pull away for their first win ever at the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Championship.
Spalding pressure forced 20 turnovers and grabbed 8 steals on Point Park.
Chartrea'l Hall led the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Tournament Champions with 27 points, 16 boards and 5 assists. Chad O'Brien scored 19 points and grabbed rebounds. Adrian Des Las Haras added 17 as well.
Spalding's win advances them to the round of 16 Friday in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Championship at 6:45 p.m. Eastern Time agianst the host school Ozarks (Mo.).
