Candy Walls hits Two Milestones
Berea College Junior reaches 1,000 Points and 500 Rebounds
Berea College (KY) junior Candy Walls scored her 1,000th career point versus Midway College (KY) at Berea's Seabury Center on Tuesday, January 22. Walls' field goal late in the first half helped Berea to a 63-26 halftime lead in a game the Lady Mountaineers would win 110-71.
With 15 points, Walls was Berea's high scorer. In the 21 minutes she played Walls also logged 7 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists, and a blocked shot.
Earlier this month Walls, a 5-7 forward from Stanton, KY, seized her 500th rebound to help Berea overcome Indiana University-Southeast 107-75 on Thursday, January 17. She now has 1007 points and 519 rebounds in her career.
Berea coach Bunky Harkleroad commented, "Candy is a terrific athlete and a fierce competitor. She plays as hard as anyone I've ever coached and has been a key member of our team. We are very proud of the fact that she is now a member of both the 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs at Berea. She is one of a very few who have accomplished either in the history of our program."
Walls says, "I try to go as hard as I can all the time. I would like young athletes to know that my approach to the game is to play each game as if it is my last game, but also that basketball games are won by teams, not individuals. The most important thing, though, is just to have fun!"
Walls is a graduate of Powell County (KY) High School. She leads the Lady Mountaineers in rebounds and ranks second on the team in points and steals. She is averaging 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 steals per 40 minutes played.
The 13-9 Lady Mountaineers will host St Louis College of Pharmacy in a KIAC contest on Friday, January 25.
