Alice Lloyd Eagles Speak About Champions of Character
Players speak to Hindman Elementary students
Hindman, Ky.
The Alice Lloyd Eagles Men's Basketball team once again showed how they are truly "Champions of Character" this past week. ALC Head Coach J.R. Hammonds, along with seniors Eric Mullins, Preston Simon-Spradlin, Will Dillard, Corey Hairston, and Rodney Mitchell, made the short journey to Hindman Elementary in Hindman, Ky. to speak with the students about the importance of good sportsmanship and earning an education. Coach Hammond and his seniors were warmly welcomed by the crowd that flocked to the gym of H.E.S.
The festivities kicked off when Hindman Elementary Head Coach Shawn Damron introduced the college athletes and their first year head coach. After the seniors spoke to the crowd about pride, character, and respect, the Hindman Elementary basketball players were introduced to their fans. After this took place, the student athletes of H.E.S. were treated to a pizza party, and they were very excited to have the opportunity to visit with the Eagles squad.
"Our first annual Meet the Yellow Jackets night was a huge success," said Coach Damron. "Our kids really enjoyed being introduced to the fans. They also were really happy getting to spend time with the college athletes that they look up to, and to listen to their positive message."
Coach Hammond also commented that he was glad to be a part of this special event. "I was very happy with the opportunity that Coach Damron presented us with. It is great to be in a position where you are able to give back to the community that you love. Along with the players, I thoroughly enjoyed this outing."
Speaking on behalf of the college players, Preston Simon- Spradlin commented, "It makes us feel good to talk to the kids about the right way to represent your school and yourself on the court. Kids see so much emphasis on negative behavior that many of them start to believe that bad sportsmanship is the normal way to go. We want them to realize that there is a right way to conduct yourself and that playing hard and demonstrating good sportsmanship will pay off big dividends in the future."
You can catch the Hindman Yellow Jackets along with the Alice Lloyd Eagles in action beginning this November. Both squads are looking forward to having a successful year; not only on, but off the court as well.
