KIAC Women's Basketball Tournament Day One
Friday's semifinals set after two games Thursday.
WILMORE, Ky. (February 28, 2008) The 2007-08 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) women's basketball tournament began on Thursday at Asbury College. Asbury College and Berea College won in the two quarterfinals on the day to advance to the semifinals. Midway College and Indiana University Southeast will join Thursday's winners in Friday afternoon's play. Alice Lloyd and St. Louis College of Pharmacy were eliminated.
Game #1 (2:00 p.m.) vs. No. 4 Alice Lloyd College vs. No. 5 Asbury College
No. 5 Asbury College defeated No. 4 Alice Lloyd College on Thursday 55-51. A hard fought battle in the first half gave Asbury (13-15) a slight edge at the half 31-27. Cold shooting dominated the first six minutes of the second half with a combined six points between teams in that time. The lead would never pass 10 and Alice Lloyd (11-15) would storm back to within three in the last minute before a free throw by Lindsey Wood (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) with seven seconds left sealed the deal.
Asbury's balanced attack was led by Anna Stephenson (Covington, Ky./ Covington Christian H.S.) with 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Brittany Abbott (Monticello. Ky./ Clinton Co.) scored 15 for the Eagles. Wood's free throw was among 11 of her points along with seven rebounds.
Alice Lloyd's Sierra Wynn (Evarts, Ky.) scored 20 points with eight rebounds. Kaylan Richardson (Owenton, Ky) and Taran Cody (Hazard, Ky.) scored 13 a piece. Cody also added nine of the team's 35 rebounds.
No. 5 Asbury moves on to play the No. 1 seed Midway College in the semifinals at 12 p.m.

Game #2 (4:30 p.m.) No. 3 Berea College vs. No. 6 St. Louis College of Pharmacy
No. 3 Berea College moves on to the semifinals after defeating No.6 St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Thursday 125-43. Berea's (18-11) substitutions and bench size were a limiting factor for STLCOP (2-19). Five Berea players topped 10 points for the game. STLCOP managed to keep the game close on the boards with 36 rebounds compared to 46 for Berea.
Berea was led in points by Sa'de Mullins (Elizabethtown, Ky. /John Hardin) with 19 points. Candy Walls (Stanton, Ky. /Powell County) led the team under the basket with seven boards and 17 points. Annbruce Madden's (Lexington, Ky. /Paul Dunbar) presence was felt on both ends of the floor with nine assists and five steals.
For St. Louis, Jennifer Littrell (Warrenton, Mo.) had the highest point total for the team at 14. Sandra Pratt (Popular Bluff, Mo.) had a double double with 10 boards and points exactly. Alexsis Diveney (Hamilton, Ill) also scored 10.
No. 3 seed Berea advances to the semifinals against No. 2 seed Indiana University Southeast Friday at 2:30 p.m.
