KIAC Women's Basketball Tournament Day Two
Midway and Berea to play for automatic bid to Nationals Saturday
WILMORE, Ky. (February 29, 2008) The 2007-08 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) women's basketball tournament continued on Friday at Asbury College. Midway College and Berea College won in the two semifinals to advance to the Saturday 5:00 p.m. final in Wilmore, Ky. Asbury College and Indiana University Southeast were eliminated.
Game #1 (12:00 p.m.) No. 1 Midway College vs. No. 5 Asbury College
No. 1 Midway College advanced to the finals after defeating No. 5 Asbury College 58-38 on Friday. The game would remain close through the end of the first half with Midway ahead 24-21 at the break. Midway (23-7) would pull away after a 28-28 tie with a 14-0 run to seal the deal. Cold shooting from Asbury (13-16) made the difference with only 22 percent shooting from the field. Asbury had 33 rebounds and held their own on by staying nearly even with Midway's 34.
Midway's bench would also prove to be crucial with a 24 to eight edge. Ashley Parker (Midway, Fla. /Amos P. Godby) and Danielle Lascoe (Louisville, Ky. /Jeffersontown) would tie for Midway leading point total at 14 a piece. Parker would also lead the team in total rebounds with nine. Beth Jamison (Taylorsville, Ky. /Spencer Co.) also had a big day on the boards with six.
Asbury's Jenny Bunge (Lexington, Ky. /Lexington Christian) led the way for the hosts with 11 points and nine boards. Lindsey Wood (Colorado Springs, Colo./Evangelical Christian) had six points and six rebounds. Five of the rebounds were on the defensive end. On the offensive boards Allison Smith (Mt. Ida, Ark. /Mt. Ida) came up with six loose balls.

Game #2 (2:30 p.m.) No. 2 Indiana University Southeast vs. No. 3 Berea College
No. 3 Berea College will play for the KIAC title after defeating No. 2 Indiana University Southeast 84-79 Friday. This is the second year in a row Berea (19-11) advances from the third seed to the final. Berea pulled away to a 19-6 lead early in the first half until IU Southeast (19-12) sliced it down to 45-39 at the half. Berea then went up by 11 early in the half. Tough physical play marked the middle of the half as IU Southeast battled to keep it close until the end.
Berea's Annbruce Madden (Lexington, Ky. /Paul Dunbar) went four for five from the field in her 19 point game. Ashley Howard (Salyersville, Ky. /Magoffin Co.) put up 16 points and seven assists. Stephanie Corry's (Bedford, Ky./ Trimble Co.) 15 points came with three steals. The steals were a part of the points off turnovers dominance by the Mountaineers 28 to 11.
IU Southeast's Tia Wineinger(Dubois, Ind. /Dubois) went six for eight from the field in a 16 point outing. She also added eight rebounds to lead the team. Tiffani Slaughter's(Louisville, Ky./Eastern H.S.) 14 rebounds helped IU Southeast win the battle of the boards 58-40. Alden Krausse(Floyds Knobs, Ind./ Presentation Academy) also had 13 points for the Grenadiers.
