Berea wins 2008 KIAC Women's Basketball Title
Berea makes the NAIA National Tournament for the third straight time.
WILMORE, Ky. (March 1, 2008) No. 3 Berea College (20-11) defeated No.1 Midway College (23-8) for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship 121-101 Saturday evening. A dominant performance was marked by a hot shooting night on Berea's end. Berea hit 12 of 24 three point attempts in the first half to extend its big lead early. Berea also capitalized on turnovers by Midway with 42 points coming off of them.
A series of runs, including an 11-0 run midway through the first half widened the Berea lead to 41-25. Berea would expand the lead to 27 before a late 15-4 run by Midway made it 63-45 at the break. Berea's three pointers would continue to pose issues as Midway tried to keep pace throughout the rest of the contest. Midway stayed within two on second half points and shot 43 percent from the field in that time frame.
Berea had three players with 20 plus points in the contest. Ashley Howard (Salyersville, Ky./ Magoffin Co.) led the way with 25 points and eight assists. Sa'de Mullins (Elizabethtown, Ky. /John Hardin) hit five of eight from long range in her 24 point game. Annbruce Madden (Lexington, Ky. /Paul Dunbar) hit all four of her attempts to score 21.
Midway's Danielle Lascoe and Beth Jamison tied for the team lead in points at 15. Jamison (Taylorsville, KY/Spencer Co. H.S.) completed the game with 11 rebounds for a double double. Lascoe (Louisville, KY/Jeffersontown H.S.) also added four assists. Ashley Parker's (Midway, FL/Amos P. Godby H.S.) 14 rebounds came with 10 points on the team.
Berea's win gives them an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Championship on March 12-18, 2008 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. For more information on the national tournament please visit: www.naia.org.
