KIAC Approves Funding for Champions of Character Grants

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 16th, 2008) The athletic directors of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) have approved new funding for the NAIA Champions of Character program. Each of the conference's ten schools will be eligible for up to three hundred dollars per school to help pay or defray costs of activities related to the programs. The package was approved as part of the conference's 2008-09 budget.

"The ideals embraced by Champions of Character are those that have served us well throughout history," KIAC Commissioner Bill Melton said. "We are eager to reinforce these proven traits in our student athletes."

The Champions of Character program was launched in 2000 by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The program is designed to enhance core values and character in student-athletes, parents and coaches in themselves and communities. The five core values are Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship.

Member schools have been recognized for their efforts in the program in the past. In 2006-07, Alice Lloyd, Indiana University Southeast, and Mountain State University were recognized as Champions of Character Institutions. Projects done by KIAC member schools this year include volunteering at community events, visiting nursing homes, and a YMCA fundraiser.

"I think that the grants are an innovative way to emphasize the importance of the Champions of Character program to the conference," IU Southeast Athletic Director Pat Mrozowski said.

The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is comprised of ten schools based in Kentucky and neighboring states including Alice Lloyd College, Asbury College, Berea College, Brescia University, Cincinnati Christian University, Indiana University East, Indiana University Southeast, Midway College, Mountain State University, and Saint Louis College of Pharmacy.
