ALC Baseball assists with Rural Area Medical

The Alice Lloyd College Baseball team has recently helped show what both the Holiday and "Champions of Character " spirit is all about. Alice Lloyd College Head Baseball Coach Scott Cornett and the entire team made the short trip over to The Knott County Sportsplex, located on Route 80 just outside Hindman, KY. The journey was made in order to help with an amazing event that helped many of the areas uninsured families receive much needed medical care.

The Rural Area Medical (RAM) event brought a unique opportunity to the area through the coordinated efforts of many people. Numerous doctors, nurses, dentist, optometrist, and others involved in the medical or care giving fields volunteered their time and energy starting.

Angelia Smith, one of the RAM coordinators had this to say about the event. "Hundreds of uninsured and underinsured people from all over the area and as far away as St. Louis were lined up outside the Sportsplex Saturday morning waiting to receive free medical, vision, and/or dental care. Services they would not have been able to receive due to the weak economy and the need for affordable healthcare had it not been for this event. Many of these people have to choose between buying groceries and healthcare. During the 2 day event a total of 720 patients were registered for services and 822 services were rendered. This was a medical savings of $100,540. Of course all of this could not have happened had it not been for the 461 people that took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer their time and work the event. A total of 112 professionals including dentist, ophthalmologist, optometrist, medical doctors, nurse practitioners, hygienist, and dental assistants, 52 nurses, and 297 general volunteers donated their time to make this event happen. Many thanks and appreciation go out to the Alice Lloyd Baseball team for volunteering their time and helping with the event. This event would not have been the success it was had it not been for their hard work and devotion to making it all happen."

During the weekend event the baseball team loaded and unloaded trucks with medical equipment, cleaned and took out trash, pulled and folded the floor coverings, and then cleaned the floors before leaving the Sportsplex.

Speaking on behalf of the ALC coaching staff Assistant Coach Jason Stowers commented "This was a great event and was a huge help to so many of the families here at home and in the surrounding areas. For some of the families, being able to see that their children have medical care was a Christmas wish come true. It was good to see our guys willing to jump in and help any way they could. In addition to just helping, every time we do something like this our kids learn a lot about themselves and other people. They are very humbled by this type of project and many of them realize how fortunate they are at home. It was great to see the look on everyone's face when the baseball team walked into the Sportsplex to help. "
