KIAC Men's Basketball Tournament Day One Asbury survives overtime thriller while Berea advances on to Friday.

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. (February 26, 2009) - The 2008-09 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) men's basketball tournament began on Thursday at Alice Lloyd College. Asbury College and Berea College won in the quarterfinals over Alice Lloyd College and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Asbury and Berea will join IU Southeast and IU East in Friday afternoon's semifinal play.

Game #1 (12:00 p.m.) No. 4 Asbury College vs. No. 5 Alice Lloyd College

No. 4 Asbury College defeated No. 5 Alice Lloyd 84-81 in overtime on Thursday. The game went back and forth throughout right up until the final seconds of overtime. A shot by Asbury's (18-11) Jordan Hammonds with three seconds left put Asbury ahead at 84-81. A last second pass was collected by Alice Lloyd (12-18) but the shot was short from near half court.

Asbury's three pointers kept the team alive with 12 for the game. Michael Spann (Wilmore, Ky. / West Jessamine) made clutch threes late in the game and led the team with 32 points, with five threes. Hammonds (London, Ky./ South Laurel) last second shot was among his 12 points on the points on the afternoon. On the boards Brian Johnson (Wilmore, Ky. / West Jessamine) grabbed 15 to lead the team.
Alice Lloyd used the inside game and size to counter. Nick Brumback (Grey Hawk, Ky./Jackson County) had the rebounds total on the team with nine on top of 15 points. Will Dillard (Beckley, W. Va. / Woodrow Wilson) led the team in points with twenty one points and he also grabbed and eight boards and seven assists. Corie Hairston (Beckley, W. Va. / Woodrow Wilson) also had 20 points.

No 4 Asbury College advances to the semifinals and will face No.1 Indiana University Southeast at 12 p.m Friday.

Game #2 (2:00 p.m.) No. 3 Berea College vs. No. 6 St. Louis College of Pharmacy

No. 3 Berea College defeated No. 6 St. Louis College of Pharmacy 73-46 on Thursday. St. Louis College of Pharmacy (3-23) stayed close through most of the first half before Berea College's (17-10) bench depth and size inside took over the game. Berea's had 41 rebounds compared to 21 for St. Louis College of Pharmacy on the afternoon.

Berea's Mikah Turner (Maysville, Ky.) had 26 points and nine rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Charles Wandera (Kampala, Uganda) scored 16 including eight for ten from the field.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy relied on Josh Boudeman's (Olympia, Ill.) 10 for 14 outing from the field for 21 points. Jack Dallas (Hillsboro, Mo.) had eight points and four boards for the Eutectics.

No. 3 Berea College advances to the semifinals and will face No. 2 Indiana University East at 2 p.m. Friday.
