KIAC Men's Basketball Semifinals

Both Indiana schools advance to Saturday's Final

MEN'S BASKETBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT DAY TWO

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. (February 27, 2009) - The 2008-09 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) men's basketball tournament continued on Friday with two semifinals. Indiana University Southeast and Indiana University East will play in Saturday evening's final. Asbury College and Berea College were eliminated from the tournament.

Game #3 (12:00 p.m.) No.1 Indiana University Southeast vs. No. 4 Asbury College

No. 1 Indiana University Southeast defeated No. 4 Asbury College Friday 83-75. IU Southeast survived a high pressure onslaught by Asbury. Asbury (18-12) led in steals for the game 12-7 and forced 19 turnovers. IU Southeast's (22-7) size proved key in the 42-34 rebounding advantage.

IU Southeast's James Thompkins (Indianapolis Ind. /Georgetown College KY) had a double double with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Carlos Mitchell (Louisville, Ky. /Fern Creek) made 9 for 16 from the field in a 21 point outing. Craig Bryant (New Albany Ind./ New Albany) put home 17 points and eight rebounds to round out the trio of double figure scorers for the team.

Asbury's trio of double digit scorers was topped by Phillip Morrison's (Louisville, KY/ Pleasure Ridge Park) 18 points. Brian Johnson (Wilmore, Ky. / West Jessamine) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Michael Spann's (Wilmore, Ky. / West Jessamine) afternoon involved 14 points and five boards.

Game #4 (2:00 p.m.) No. 2 Indiana University East vs. No. 3 Berea College

No. 2 Indiana University East defeated No.3 Berea College Friday 89-72. IU East (23-8) pushed ahead late in the first half to make it 49-32 over Berea (17-11) at the half. Berea chipped away at the lead to narrow IU East's lead to four with five minutes left before a late run sealed the deal.

IU East shot 58 percent on the game compared to 42 percent for their opponent. Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind. /Jay County) finished with 31 points after a big 22 point first half. DeCoreo Edwards (Hopkinsville, Ky. /Christian County) scored 12 on the afternoon with four boards. Dustin Overton (Portland, Ind. /Jay County) grabbed eight boards and led the team in rebounds.

Berea shot 50 percent in the second half keeping them close during the middle of the half. Mikah Turner (Maysville, Ky.) had 23 points to lead his team in scoring. Charles Wandera (Kampala, Uganda) put home 20 points and brought in nine boards to lead the rebounding category. Chase Wofford (Harrodsburg, Ky.) also took in seven of the team's 28 rebounds.
