KIAC Women's Basketball Tournament Day One Asbury and Alice Lloyd are in the semifinals

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. (February 26, 2009) - The 2008-09 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) women's basketball tournament began Thursday at Alice Lloyd College. Asbury College and Alice Lloyd College won in the quarterfinals over Midway College and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Asbury and Alice Lloyd will join Indiana University Southeast and Berea College in Friday evening's semifinal play.

Game #1 (6:00 p.m.) No. 4 Asbury College vs. No. 5 Midway College

No. 4 Asbury College defeated No.5 Midway College 80-70 on Thursday. Asbury (15-16) edged away late in the game after a tight battle through the first and part of the second half over Midway (2-26). Asbury's accuracy also from the field proved key as they outshot Midway 42 percent to 34.

Anna Stephenson and Hayley Spivey had double doubles for Asbury. Anna Stephenson (Covington, Ky.) had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead in rebounds. Hayley Spivey (Harrodsburg, Ky.) got into the category with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Albin (Hartford, Ky.) had the higher scoring outing by the team with 25 points.

A trio of players made double digits in points for Midway. Haley Wilkinson (Glasgow, Ky.) lead Midway's points with 15. Kayla Rose (Morganfield, Ky.) had a presence in both scoring and boards with 13 points and five rebounds. Jackie Hicks (Florence, Ky.) added 10 more points to the Midway total.

No. 4 Asbury College advances to the semifinals and will face No.1 Indiana University Southeast at 6 p.m. Friday.

Game #2 (8:00 p.m.) No. 3 Alice Lloyd College vs. No. 6 St. Louis College of Pharmacy

No. 3 Alice Lloyd College will move on after a 79-31 win over No. 6 St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Alice Lloyd (17-12) overpowered and outmatched St. Louis College of Pharmacy (1-21) on multiple levels. They held the leads in rebounds 51-30 and steals 12-3. Alice Lloyd also shot 41 percent from the field.

Alice Lloyd had a variety of top scoring players. Five players had 8 or more points in the contest. Gemma Gray (Manchester, Ky.) and Chelsea Jarrell (Paintsville, Ky.) tied atop the points total with 10 a piece. Sierra Wynn (Evarts, Ky.) had eight points and eight rebounds.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy's big total came via Jennifer Littrell's (Warrenton, Mo.) 16 point seven rebound night. Jeana Walton Day (Florissant, Mo.) grabbed seven rebounds including six on the defensive end. Susanna Hurtte (Juneau, Ala.) had eight points and five rebounds.

No. 3 Alice Lloyd College becomes the final semifinalist of the tournament and will face No. 2 Berea College at 8 p.m. Friday.
