IU Southeast wins KIAC Men's Basketball Title

Defeats IU East in the Finals.

KIAC MEN'S BASKETBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

PIPPA PASSES, Ky. (February 28, 2009) - No. 1 Indiana University Southeast defeated No. 2 Indiana University East 87-58 to win the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship title. The regular season champion IU Southeast (23-7) led by 15 at halftime and expanded the edge throughout the second half over IU East (23-9).

IU Southeast's led on the offensive end in shooting with 54 percent shooting and 22 points in the paint. The Grenadiers team had five players with 10 plus points. Alex Gravelle (Louisville, Ky./ University of Southern Indiana) was the leading scorer with 21 points. Craig Bryant (New Albany, Ind. / New Albany) went eight for 12 from the free throw line and finished with 15 points. Charlie Gonzales (Louisville, Ky. /Bellarmine University) also grabbed nine rebounds.

IU East's had the slight advantage in points in the paint 24-22. Justin Hawkins (Evansville, Ind. /Kentucky Wesleyan College) led the team in points with 12 and seven rebounds. Tyler Rigby (Bryant, Ind. / Jay County) and Brent Burris (Indianapolis, Ind.) both put home eight points apiece for the Red Wolves.

IU Southeast's win gives them an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Championship on March 11-17, 2009 at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. For more information on the national tournament please visit: www.naia.org.
