No. 1 Davenport (MI) Defeats No. 8 IU Southeast 88-62 in NAIA First Round
No Eigth Seed has knocked off a one seed in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament
Sioux City, Iowa (March 12, 2009) - The IU Southeast women's basketball program fell in the first round of the 18th Annual NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament on Thursday night 88-62 to No. 1 Davenport (MI).
IU Southeast is now 1-4 all-time at the national tournament after falling tonight to Davenport. The Grenadiers trailed 44-19 at halftime to the high-powered Panthers of Davenport and didn't recover.
KIAC All-Conference senior Andrea Chambers (Evansville, Ind. - Evansville North H.S.) led IU Southeast with 11 points and six rebounds. Senior Jenna Richie (Evansville, Ind. - Evansville Central H.S.) also added 11 points with one rebound. IU Southeast shot 36-percent from the field and only 24-percent from 3 -point range for the game. The high-pressure Davenport defense forced the Grenadiers into committing 30 turnovers which was pivotal to the Panthers' success.
Davenport was led by Brittany Lyman with 18 points and seven rebounds. For the game, the Panthers shot 44-percent from the field and 29-percent from 3-point range while earning 18 steals as a team.
With the loss, the Grenadiers (19-9 / 9-0 KIAC) have now been eliminated from the tournament and finish an otherwise very successful season as Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) Regular-Season and Tournament Champions.
Davenport (30-2) will now move on to the Sweet Sixteen round of the national tournament where they will face No.4 Huntington (Ind.) tomorrow (Friday 3/13) at 3:30 p.m. (CDT).
