Grenadier Women's Basketabll to Face Davenport (Mich.)

IU Southeast women play opening round of NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship on March 12.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (March 5, 2009) - The Indiana University Southeast women's basketball team will play Davenport (Mich.) in the first round of the 18th Annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 12.

In his 20th season as IU Southeast women's basketball head coach, KIAC Coach of the Year Robin Farris has led the Grenadiers (19-8, 9-0 KIAC) to an undefeated record in conference play this year. IU Southeast has also won 14 out of its last 15 games heading into the national championship.

KIAC All-Conference senior Andrea Chambers (Evansville, Ind. - Evansville North H.S.) is leading the Grenadiers this season averaging 10.4 points and five rebounds a game. KIAC All-Conference selection Whitney Duncan (Louisville, Ky. - Moore H.S.) is also playing strong for the Grenadiers this season averaging nine points and three assists a game.

No. 1-seed Davenport Panthers are currently 29-2 overall and 13-1 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC). More information on the Panthers can be found via their athletic webpage at: http://dupanthers.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/dave-w-baskbl-body.html

This year marks the Grenadiers' fourth appearance in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The team's last appearance occurred during the 2001-02 season when the team made it to the Sweet Sixteen round of the tournament before losing to the eventual tournament runner-up Cornerstone University (Mich.) 58-56. The team also made national tournament appearances in 2000-01 and 1998-99.

The 32-team national championship field is comprised of 23 automatic qualifiers from NAIA affiliated conferences, plus the host and eight at-large selections, which are determined using the final regular-season rating released March 4. The national tournament will be played March 11-17 with all games being played in the Tyson Events Center's Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.

The first 30 games of the Championships will be video-streamed live on the Internet (WatchNAIA.com), while the National Championship Game on March 17 will air live nationwide on CBS College Sports TV.
