"Varsity Sports" Course Student-Athletes Raise Money for Charity
As students in the "Varsity Sports" class, fourth-years Amy Hall (cross country) and Jake Dallas (men's basketball) along with third-year Nicole Freund (women's basketball) were required to design and lead a team service project. Hall, Dallas, and Freund chose "Coaches Curing Kids Cancer" as their charity and challenged their respective sports teams to raise money for the cause by collecting pledges and donations at the men's basketball homecoming game on February 13.
Coaches Curing Kids Cancer describes itself as a "unique, national grassroots movement which aims to raise both awareness and money to find cures for all types of childhood cancer." CCKC's programs fund the development of cutting-edge therapies to replace traditional chemotherapy in childhood cancer.
The service project allowed the three students to work together in uniting the STLCOP teams toward a common goal. Together, the teams collected over $250 for CCKC.
The Varsity Sports class, available for third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students, was designed by athletic director Jill Jokerst for student-athletes to acquire principles of sportsmanship and learn fair play, honesty and integrity from amateur athletic competition
