Uptempo pace helps IU Southeast qualify for National TournamentFRANKFORT, Ky. (February 27, 2010) - No. 1 Indiana University Southeast defeated No. 2 Brescia University 78-71 to win the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship title. Brescia (23-10) took a narrow edge into the half at 34-33. A physical up tempo style prevailed in the second half with IU Southeast (25-4) edging ahead late. IU Southeast had 21 fast break points in the game compared to Brescia's two.
IU Southeast's had three players above ten points. Jazzmarr Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) scored 20 points and assisted eight times in 37 minutes on the court. Carlos Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.) scored 17 points via 6 for 11 shooting from the field including four made three pointers. Alex Gravelle (Louisville, Ky.) hit three times from long range in his 11 point night.
Brescia outrebounded their opponents 40-30 and had 19 second chance points to stay close. Anthony Ingram (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored 19 points, rebounded 10 times, and had five blocks. Andrew Howard (Owensboro, Ky.) had 16 points and 10 boards. Aaron Tandy (Louisville, Ky.) assisted five times to go with his 15 points.
IU Southeast's win gives them an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Championship on March 10-16 at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. For more information on the national tournament please visit: www.naia.org.
