No. 4-Ranked IU Southeast Men Pull Away From Brescia, 91-63
NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast men's basketball team won a physical conference game on Tuesday evening, defeating the visiting Brescia University Bearcats 91-63 at home in New Albany, Ind.
The No. 4-ranked Grenadiers (NAIA Division II) struggled early out of the gate. Brescia jumped out to a 21-13 lead over the Grenadiers in the first ten minutes. IU Southeast fought back to take the lead back with under four minutes left in the first half. IU Southeast would not look back after taking the lead for the first time, rolling to a 28 point victory.
IU Southeast (19-3, 8-0 KIAC) was led by junior Jazzmarr Ferguson (Louisville, Ky.) with 23 points, three rebounds and two assists. Senior Carlos Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.) cashed in a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Grenadiers.
George White (Louisville, Ky.) and Brice Mitchell (Louisville, Ky.) each added 14 point respectively to aid the Grenadier offensive assault. Rick Bodiford (Louisville, Ky.) rounded out double-digit scores for IU Southeast with 12 points and nine rebounds.
IU Southeast led by only seven points at halftime, 41-34.
The Grenadiers shot 48-percent from field goal range (31-of-64) and only 17-percent from behind the 3-pt. arc (3-of-17). IU Southeast connected on 26 of its 33 total free-throw attempts (79-percent).
Brescia (15-9 / 4-3 KIAC) was led by Anthony Ingram who recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Howard scored 15 points with five rebounds for the Bearcats. Bryce Garrett rounded out double-digit scores for Brescia 10 points and two rebounds.
The visiting Bearcats shot 32-percent from the field and 31-percent from beyond the arc. Berea relied heavily on its starters throughout the game with only 15 of its 63 total points coming from off the bench.
IU Southeast stole the ball for a total of four times. IU Southeast won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding Brescia 45-36. The Grenadiers turned the ball over only nine times compared Brescia's 20 total turnovers.
With the win, IU Southeast remains undefeated in the KIAC with an 8-0 conference record.
The IU Southeast men's basketball team will travel to St. Louis, Mo. this weekend to take on St. Louis College of Pharmacy at 2 p.m.
The Grenadiers will then play two other road games against Ohio Dominican and Asbury College before returning home on Tuesday, Feb. 16 when IU Southeast celebrates its 2010 Senior Night.
The Grenadier men will take on Alice Lloyd College beginning at 8 p.m. on Feb. 16. The women's basketball team will also take on Alice Lloyd beginning at 6 p.m. the same evening. Senior night festivities will occur prior to the tipoff of each game for that team's respective seniors.
The IU Southeast men's basketball team will honor its seven graduating seniors prior to their 8 p.m. tipoff. Those seven seniors are: Alex Gravelle, DeJon Gary, Josh Lowery, George White, Carlos Mitchell, Craig Bryant and Clay Ryan.
Doors open at 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening (Feb. 16). Ticket prices for the event are $7 for adult general admission and free of charge for children 12 years old or younger. IU Southeast season tickets can also be purchased at the door for $25.
