Red Wolves' Legg finishes fourth in debut meet
MARION, Ind. - Vanessa Legg set the bar high for future Indiana
University East track and field performances.
Legg (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High School) finished fourth out of
19 in the high jump during the Polar Bear Invitational at Indiana
Wesleyan University on March 27.
Legg became the first IU East student-athlete to take part in an NAIA track and field competition.
"Very proud of her," said IU East athletic director Mark Hester, who worked with Legg during the meet.
Legg cleared 1.57 meters (5 feet, 1.75 inches). Legg matched the winning height, but placed fourth based on total misses throughout the competition.
Sierra Brown of Siera Height, Kaycee Damm of Albion, Thekla Lorenz of Ball State and Legg all cleared 1.57 meters. Brown claimed first place.
Hester said Brown and Legg were the only competitors in the field who came close to clearing what proved to be the final height.
Legg jumped despite a leg injury that hindered her training in the week leading up to the competition.
"She really gutted it out," Hester said.
