Legg claims IU East track and field's first first ANDERSON, Ind. - Good decision to add The Raven Outdoor Invitational to the Red Wolves' track and field schedule.

And a really good decision to add Vanessa Legg to the high jump a few minutes before the start of the competition April 16.

Legg won the high jump, and Indiana University East's women's track and field athletes also brought home a pair of runner-up finishes from the meet at Anderson University.

Legg (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High School) became the first IU East NAIA track and field athlete to finish first in any event.

She also placed second in the 100 meter dash and sixth in the 200 meter dash in her first running events of the season.

"I had a blast," Legg said.

IU East sophomore Kait Ervin (West Alexandria, Ohio/Twin Valley South High School) added a second-place finish in the discus throw.

All of this at an event the Red Wolves added to their schedule just three days earlier to get an extra tune-up before the Kentucky Intercollegiate Conference meet.

"I'm really proud of them," said IU East athletic director Mark Hester, who accompanied the Red Wolves' athletes to the meet. "They both did great."

Legg initially did not plan to compete in the high jump, but added the event to her meet schedule late in the week.

Good choice. Legg leaped 1.52 meters (4-11.75) to best a field of four.

"I did pretty well," Legg said. "And I got a shirt - and I love shirts!"

Legg then ran a 13.89 to finish second out of four in the 100.

"My goal was just not to get last," Legg said. "I got off to a slow start, and I really had to pick it up to get second."

Legg finished sixth out of eight in her first 200 of the season. She finished in 29.27.

"I ran awful in the 200," said Legg, who started in Lane 8. "I felt like I wasn't going anywhere. I felt like I was in the lead for the first 100 meters, but then when we hit 100 meters left I knew I was in trouble."

Soon after Legg finished the 200, Ervin clinched a second-place finish in the discus with a season-best throw of 32.10 meters (105-4) on her last attempt.

"I'm pleased, but I know I can do better for next week," Ervin said.

Ervin also finished eighth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 9.44 meters (30-11.75).

"It was my PR for a meet, but I still didn't think I did very well," Ervin said.

The Red Wolves will compete in the KIAC meet April 24 at Berea College.

"This was a really good meet to have before the conference meet," Ervin said.
