IU East golf finishes sixth at Heidelberg
TIFFIN, Ohio - The Red Wolves learned their lessons well.
The Indiana University East men's golf team improved its 18-hole
team score by 28 strokes in the final round of the Heidelberg
Collegiate Classic at Mohawk Golf and Country Club on April 2.
The Red Wolves finished sixth out of eight teams after entering the
final round in seventh place.
IU East finished with a 36-hole team
score of 702 on the 6,685-yard layout.
"It was still windy, but
the players dealt with it better," said IU East coach Von Ebeling.
"Their practice round (March 31) and their experiences in the first
round made it easier to make adjustments."
The Red Wolves carded a
337 one day after shooting a 365, even though most of the IU East
players thought the pin placements were tougher in the second round.
Adrian
College won the team title with a 639.
Jon Kuiper of Calvin
College was medalist with a 147.
Junior Nick Ary (Brookville,
Ohio/Brookville High School) led IU East with a two-day total of 157,
good for seventh place in the 46-player field.
Ary shot 3-over 75
in the final round, the third-best score of the second round.
Ary's
round included a birdie on his 10th hole.
"He continued to play
smart," Ebeling said.
Senior Mark Bevins (Hollansburg,
Ohio/Tri-Village High School) finished with a 178, good for 29th place.
Bevins
mis-hit his first drive of the day, but recovered to par the hole. It
proved a good omen. Bevins went on to shoot 85 to improve by eight
strokes over his opening round score.
Freshman Zack Palmer
(Richmond, Ind./Richmond High School) shot 181 - 88 in the final round -
and placed 32nd.
Freshman Derrick McNeely (Connersville,
Ind./Connersville High School) shot 191 - 89 in the final round - and
placed 38th.
Freshman Brandon Loomis (Union City, Ind./Union City
Community High School) had a 196 - 99 in the final round - and finished
40th.
Four of IU East's five men's golfers improved their score
from the first round, including a 13-stroke improvement for McNeely.
Red
Wolves freshman Courtney Barlage (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles High
School) injured her hand during the first round April 1 and was unable
to compete in the final round of the women's tournament.
IU East's
men return to the course April 15 at the Cincinnati Christian
University Invitational.
"It was nice to play some teams outside
of our conference," said Ebeling, whose team faced only Kentucky
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes in its first two tournaments.
"Now
we're looking forward to getting back to practices and and then going
to CCU to go against our conference opponents."
The IU East women
are scheduled to host the J.C. Penney Women's Apparel Spring Golf
Classic on April 6 at Highland Lake Golf Course.
The event
initially was scheduled for March 30 but was postponed because of wet
weather in late March. The University of Northwestern Ohio and Urbana
University are expected to join the Red Wolves in the rescheduled event.
