Milestone night for Sanders as IU East skates past Asbury
RICHMOND, Ind. - David Sanders, welcome to the club.
Sanders scored his 1,000th career point and also broke the school record for career steals as the Indiana University East men's basketball team beat Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Asbury University 97-73 on Jan. 10 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.
The NAIA Division II No. 11 Red Wolves improved to 16-4 (3-1 KIAC).
Asbury is 6-8 (0-2).
"I couldn't be more proud of Dave," said IU East coach Mark Hester as the crowd enjoyed a postgame show by the BreakSk8 skate team.
"I've gotten to watch him grow as a player and a person, and he's so deserving of these milestones he is getting."
Sanders' 3-pointer with four minutes remaining in the first half pushed him over 1,000 points for his career.
Sanders finished the game with 11 points and now has 1,005 career points.
Sanders (Indianapolis, Ind./Beech Grove High School), a senior guard, is the third member of the IU East 1,000-point club. He joins 2011 IU East graduates Tyler Rigby and Brent Burris.
"Tell Tyler and Brent I finally made it to the club," Sanders said.
Sanders' first steal with 12 minutes remaining in the first half pushed him to the top of the IU East career steals list.
Sanders entered the game tied with Burris with 202 steals. Sanders made two steals against Asbury and now has 204 career steals.
Hey Dave, which accomplishment will you tell your family members about first?
"I would say the 1,000 points," Sanders said. "The steals record is definitely meaningful, but 1,000 points is something I haven't had since I started playing basketball."
The Red Wolves had a comfortable lead by the time Sanders scored his 1,000th point.
IU East led by 10 points five minutes into the game and never let the lead dip below double digits.
The Red Wolves would lead by as much as 29 in the second half.
"We defended well," Hester said. "We did an excellent job of communicating and getting out on shooters."
Junior guard Marcus Isaac (Indianapolis, Ind./Purdue University North Central) led IU East with 19 points.
Austin Flannery had 15 for Asbury.
The Red Wolves play at Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Saint Louis College of Pharmacy on Jan. 14.
