Rebounding rewarded: Red Wolves crash the boards in KIAC win

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Red Wolves are fit to be tied.

The Indiana University East men's basketball team picked up a 103-89 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Cincinnati Christian University on Jan. 26.

Junior guard Marcus Isaac (Indianapolis, Ind./Purdue University North Central) scored 26 points to lead the NAIA Division II No. 13 Red Wolves (19-5, 6-1).

The Red Wolves pulled into a tie for the top spot in the KIAC after Indiana University Southeast lost at Asbury University later Jan. 26.

CCU fell to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the KIAC.

The Red Wolves broke ahead 10-2 and never trailed.

IU East led by as much as 21 in the second half.

The Red Wolves outrebounded the Eagles by 17 and had a 16-point advantage in points in the paint.

"No mystery why we won the game," said IU East coach Mark Hester. "When we rebound, we win."

Hester has made rebounding a point of emphasis in IU East's recent game plans. He tweaked the message for this game, emphasizing the fundamental skills needed for good rebounding on the Red Wolves' locker room chalkboard.

"Our rebounding was better than what we have been doing, but still not as good as it needs to be," Hester said.

IU East is unbeaten when it outrebounds its opponents.

Sophomore guard Matt Trimnell (Seymour, Ind./Seymour High School) added 19 points for IU East and is now 17 points away from 1,000 career points.

Six players IU East players scored at least eight points.

"Matt and Marcus can score 20 points a night easy, and we've got so many guys who can do a lot on offense," said freshman guard Tyler Fangman (Cold Spring, Ky./Beechwood High School), who scored 10 points in front of a section of friends and family members. Cold Spring is just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.

Kevin Mitchell led CCU with 38 points.

The Red Wolves host Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Berea College on Jan. 28 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.

Tipoff time is at 2 p.m.

Participants in the IU East Cheer Clinic will perform at halftime.
