Trimnell reaches 1,000 career points as Red Wolves outshoot Mountaineers
RICHMOND, Ind. - That didn't take long.
Matt Trimnell scored 28 points and became the first Indiana University East sophomore to join the 1,000-point club as the Red Wolves picked up a 93-81 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win on Jan. 28 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.
Trimnell scored the 17 points he needed to reach 1,000 points in the first 11 minutes as the NAIA Division II No. 13 Red Wolves (20-5, 7-1) reached the 20-win plateau for the third time in four years.
"I wasn't doing anything different, except I was making shots," Trimnell said. "I was open and the shots were going in. It's a good feeling to have when it feels like everything you throw up is going in."
The Red Wolves needed every shot they could get to stay ahead on a day when the Mountaineers (7-15, 2-5) had the upper hand in every stat except shooting percentage.
IU East made 54 percent of its field goals, almost half of its 3-pointers and all 13 of its free throws to stay in front.
The Red Wolves established a school record for most free throws without a miss in a single game.
"That's how we won. We just shot better," said IU East coach Mark Hester. "We didn't do anything else better. We're not going to give (the win) back, but I want us to do it playing our best; not scraping by."
The Red Wolves used a 7-0 run to re-establish a double-digit lead after Berea got within 54-50 early in the second half.
IU East would lead by as much as 18 in the final minutes.
Trimnell now has 1,011 career points.
"It wasn't a matter of if but when," Hester said.
He joins 2011 IU East graduates Tyler Rigby and Brent Burris and current Red Wolves senior David Sanders in the school's 1,000-point club.
"Every time we all get together, (Burris and Rigby) would say, '1,000-point club over here,'" Trimnell said. "I guess that includes me and Dave now."
Harry Cross led Berea with 16 points.
