Red Wolves find winning tempo against Bearcats

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Red Wolves picked up the pace and picked up a conference road win.

The Indiana University East men's basketball team picked up an 88-72 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Brescia University on Jan. 7.

The NAIA Division II No. 8 Red Wolves are 15-4 (2-1 KIAC).

The No. 40 Bearcats are 8-9 (1-1).

Sophomore guard Matt Trimnell led IU East with 24 points, including a pair of 3-pointer after the Bearcats crept within three points with 10 minutes remaining.

Trimnell's timely treys sparked 24-7 surge that boosted the Red Wolves' lead to 20 points as IU East pushed the tempo in the second half.

"It felt like we were going too slow, moving real slow," said senior guard Terry Weathers (East Chicago, Ind./Oakton Community College). "We had to get the team going.

"We can do different things, sometimes go big and sometimes we want to run, and this was a game we needed to get out and run."

Senior guard David Sanders added 15 points and now has 994 points for his IU East career.

Sanders is six points away from becoming the third IU East player to score 1,000 career points.

Hunter Rowe led Brescia with 24 points.

"We played eight minutes of good basketball," said IU East coach Mark Hester.

"But we've got to come out and play to the best of our ability for all 40 minutes. Until we do that we've got a long way to go."

IU East hosts Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Asbury University on Jan. 10 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

The Breaksk8 skate team will perform at halftime of the IU East-Asbury game and then put on a full show after the game.

General admission is $7 and includes the Breaksk8 show. All students of any age are admitted free. IU East students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Wolf Card.
