MEN'S BASKETBALL: IU Southeast Defeats IU East, 94-73
RICHMOND, Ind. - On a night when one of IU Southeast's primary weapons in its offensive arsenal failed, the Grenadiers showed they were able to adapt to clinch the KIAC regular-season title for the fifth-straight year.
The No. 17-ranked Grenadiers shot poorly from behind-the-arc, but used good defense and were dominant on the glass for the first three-fourths of the game to defeat No.11-ranked IU East 94-73 Thursday night.
The Grenadiers' (21-7, 11-1 KIAC) swarming defense and pounded IU East on the boards in the first half. IU Southeast outrebounded the IU East 29-13 in the first twenty minutes. They were also dominant at the free throw line, shooting 16 of 18 from the charity stripe. Joe Lawson shot 10-of-12 from the line in the first half to record all of his first-half points from the line.
The Red Wolves (23-6, 10-2 KIAC) shot 42 percent from behind-the-arc in the first half which helped keep them in the game. The Grenadiers were zero of nine in the first half from three-point range.
The deciding factors in the game the Grenadiers rebounding edge and great performance at the free-throw line. IU Southeast won the battle on the boards 48-33 and shot 89 percent (34-39) from the charity stripe.
Sophomore guard Wes Cox had a huge game for the Grenadiers. He led all scorers with 24 points and added five rebounds and three assists. The Red Wolves' defenders could not stay in front of him which put him at the free-throw line 15 times. He missed just one free throw.
Three other Grenadiers scored in double figures as well.
Kegan Clark had 16 points and seven rebounds,
Brice Mitchell had 10 points and seven rebounds and
Joe Lawson had 10 points and six rebounds.
Marcus Isaac had 17 points to pace the Red Wolves. David Sanders had 14 points in his final home game. Matt Trimnell had 11 points and Huston Clark 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Grenadiers shot 44 percent from the field in the game but just 27 percent (4-15) from three-point range.
IU East shot 40 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range.
