Grenadier Women Win Fourth-Straight KIAC Title
BEREA, Ky. The IU Southeast women's basketball team won its fourth-straight KIAC championship Tuesday night with a 77-64 win over regular-season champion Asbury.
The Grenadier s (26-7) came out flying to start the game. IU Southeast opened the game on a 17-0 run. Asbury did not score until the 13:15 mark of the first half. Ashmere Woods was dominant offensively and defensively and the post play of Kortney Woods and Megan Murphy forced Asbury to settle for outside shots which would not fall. Asbury started the game 1 of 11 from the field.
Ashmere had nine first half points and Megan Cureton had another strong first half as she led the Grenadiers with 10 first-half points five rebounds. The Grenadiers led 40-24 at the half on 54 percent shooting for IU Southeast and 26 percent shooting for Asbury.
Asbury was able to get within 13 points as the Grenadiers' offense was not as strong in the second half. They also committed eight second half turnovers and overcame poor free throw shooting (63 percent). But the outcome was never in doubt.
Four Grenadiers ended the game in double-figures. Megan Murphy had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Ashmere Woods finished with 19 poinots and seven rebounds, Megan Cureton finished with 16 points and eight boards and Kortney Woods had 11 points and five rebounds.
Asbury's Laura Carroll led all scorers with 26 points.
