IU Southeast Women Fall in NAIA Opening Round Game
SIOUX CITY, Iowa- The No. 25 IU Southeast Grenadiers season ended Wednesday afternoon with a 76-56 defeat to two-time defending champion Northwestern (Iowa).
Ashmere Woods scored 24 points to led all scorers. Megan Murphy finished her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tia Wineinger scored six points and had four rebounds in her final game at IU Southeast.
Northwestern (Iowa) extended its tournament winning streak to 11. The Red Raiders overcame 24 turnovers by shooting a sizzling 50 percent from the field.
Northwestern junior Kendra De Jong's 18 points led a group of four double-figure scorers for the Red Raiders, who improved to 25-7 on the season. De Jong also reeled in 15 rebounds and dished out four assists. Guards Kami Kuhlmann and Mallory Cunard each added 11 points for the victors.
The Grenadiers shot only 27.9 percent as a team and were outmuscled on the boards, 53-29. The champions of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fell to 26-8 in 2011-12.
