Points in the paint: Basketball players decorate birdhouses for entrepreneurship project
Indiana University East's basketball players earned an assist on an IU East Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) project this spring.
The Red Wolves constructed and painted wooden birdhouses as part of a SIFE community project made possible by the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation.
IU East fans can see the Red Wolves' birdhouses in the display case at the entrance of Hayes Hall on the IU East campus.
The project was designed to instruct participants in the basics of entrepreneurship, including product development, packaging, pricing and quality assurance.
The Red Wolves' efforts contributed to the total of 683 birdhouses created during the project, according to SIFE adviser Tim Scales, the director of the IU East Center for Entrepreneurship
The birdhouses are displayed on the IU East campus and at various locations in the IU East service area.
"The concept is how to create an idea into a product, and the more creative you are and the better job you do, the more value in the product," Scales said.
According to the Lowe's Web site, "the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation funds nonprofit organizations and public agencies that support our charitable goals. ... Since its inception in 2006, the Lowe's Toolbox for Education has contributed nearly $25 million to more than 5,400 schools in the United States."
