IU East tees off the NAIA's fall season
RICHMOND, Ind. - The Indiana University East men's golf team opened the NAIA's fall golf season by winning the IU East Fall Tee-Off Tournament on Aug. 21 at Highland Lake Golf Course.
IU East shot 297 and edged the University of Northwestern Ohio by two strokes on the par 72, 6,735-yard course to keep the "Clock Tower" tournament trophy in Richmond.
It was the first NAIA golf event of the fall season, according to the GolfStat.com Web site.
"I'm extremely proud of how this team performed today," said IU East coach Von Ebeling. "They really are a team. They have a team mentality, team goals and a genuine desire to pull for each other."
UNOH's Keith Long was medalist with a 71. Redshirt sophomore Joey Smart (Brookville, Ind./Morehead State University) and sophomore Cameron Cox (Farmland, Ind./Monroe Central High School) led IU East with 73s. Sophomore Levi Gough (Lynn, Ind./Randolph Southern High School) carded a 75.
"Joey is ever so steady and means a lot to this team," Ebeling said. "He commutes from more than an hour away to take classes and play golf. The players gravitate around his cool play on the course.
"And the biggest thrill for me today was the play of Cameron Cox and Levi Gough. They really came up big and saved the day for us. Both players shot well below their averages of last year."
Sophomore Luke Warren (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central High School) shot 76 and sophomore Drew Houck (Portland, Ind./Jay County High School) shot 78 as all five players on the IU East "A" team broke 80.
"Luke struggled somewhat on the front nine but managed to hold it together," Ebeling said. "Drew Houck was also right there with a solid score. It's awesome to know that our No. 5 player can break 80. Simply put, Drew is a hard worker and his seriousness toward the sport and this golf program will pay dividends for us as our season progresses.
The Red Wolves will be the host school for the "Battle at Bloomington" at Bloomington Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind., on Aug. 30.
