OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The 2015 KIAC Women's Tennis Tournament will be Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24 at Centre Court in Owensboro, Ky., and hosted by Brescia (Ky.) University.
The winner of the KIAC Tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship May 17-21 in Mobile, Ala.
The six-team, single elimination tournament has KIAC regular season champion IU Southeast (8-3, 5-0 KIAC) as the top seed. Asbury (Ky.) University (6-3, 4-1 KIAC) is the No. 2 seed and also receives a first-round bye along with IU Southeast.
The tournament begins on Friday, Oct. 23 at 9 a.m. CT with the first quarterfinal match featuring No. 3 seed Carlow (Pa.) University (2-3, 2-3 KIAC) versus No. 6 seed Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College (0-5, 0-5 KIAC). The second quarterfinal match at 11 a.m. CT includes No. 4 seed Brescia (Ky.) (4-5, 2-3 KIAC) versus No. 5 seed IU East (5-7, 2-3 KIAC).
The Carlow-Alice Lloyd winner will face No. 2 Asbury in the semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m. CT. The Brescia-IU East winner will play No. 1 IU Southeast in the second semifinal match Friday at 3 p.m. CT. The championship final round is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
IU Southeast is the top seed after putting together a perfect conference record at 5-0 KIAC. It was the 17th-straight KIAC regular-season championship for the Grenadiers, who clinched first place with a 5-4 win over Asbury (Ky.) on Oct. 10. That result put Asbury at 4-1 KIAC to end its conference schedule.
IU Southeast and Asbury split the six singles matches, 3-3, in the regular-season matchup. But the Grenadiers had claimed two of the three doubles positions earlier in the match to provide the difference.
With No. 3 Carlow, No. 4 Brescia and No. 5 IU East each finishing 2-3 in the KIAC, tiebreakers came into play for the tournament seeding. The tiebreakers took into account the final scores of conference matches.
Carlow earned the third seed by virtue of taking a singles match in its 8-1 loss to Asbury. The results for those three teams versus top seeds IU Southeast and Asbury were all 9-0 except for that match.
Brescia earned the fourth seed instead of IU East by virtue of the Bearcats beating Alice Lloyd, 7-0, compared to IU East's 7-2 win over Alice Lloyd. The head-to-head matchups between Brescia, IU East and Carlow had each team 1-1 versus the other two in the group.
For IU Southeast, the top players are Dana Frank, who was 4-1 in KIAC singles play, and Katie Walsh, who was 5-0 in KIAC singles matches. Both players were 8-3 overall for the year in singles and 9-2 overall in doubles.
Top players for No. 2 seed Asbury are Caitlin Conyers at 4-0 in KIAC singles matches and 6-2 in singles for the year, and Sarah Beth Alford at 4-1 KIAC singles and 6-3 in singles for the year. Conyers is 7-1 in doubles, and Alford is 7-2.
