KIAC Men's Golf Fall Preview Day 1 Recap

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Asbury (Ky.) University leads the field by 13 shots after Friday's first round of the KIAC Men's Golf Fall Preview Tournament being held at Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky. All nine KIAC men's golf teams are in attendance in what is a preview of the KIAC championship this coming spring.

Asbury shot a team score of 309 led by 18-hole individual leader Daniel Patterson, who shot a 1-over 73. Matthew McCurry is in third place for the Eagles and is two shots back with a 75.

WVU Tech's Matt Ryan is in second place individually after an opening 74. The Golden Bears shot 322 as a team, which is tied with Brescia (Ky.) University for second place, 13 shots behind Asbury. Brescia's top performer was Nolan White, who was one of seven players tied for sixth place with a 79.

Point Park is in fourth place at 323, and Cincinnati Christian is one shot back in fifth place at 324. IU East (333), Alice Lloyd (336), IU Kokomo (337) and Ohio Christian (342) round out the team standings.

It was a tough scoring day with temperatures in the 50s and 15- to 20-mile per hour winds. There was rain for much of the day although teams that went out early had better conditions. The final round is Saturday featuring 18 holes.

There were only 12 players of the 51 in the field who broke 80. Asbury and Point Park each had three players shoot in the 70s while WVU Tech and Brescia had two each. The other two players in the 70s were Cincinnati Christian's Taylor Suggs in fourth place with a 77 and IU Kokomo's Josh Stewart in fifth place with a 78.
