IU Southeast beats Rio Grande in "KIAC Game of the Week"
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The IU Southeast volleyball team opened its three-match road trip with a straight-set win over Rio Grande 25-23, 25-13, 25-22 to snap the RedStorm's five-match winning streak in the KIAC Game of the Week on Friday night.
Hannah Joly and Monica Loftus each had 12 kills to lead IU Southeast. Katie Fischer added eight and Michala Beasley had seven for the Grenadiers. Hannah Barker had a career-high 40 assists in the win.
The Grenadiers (9-7, 4-2 KIAC) had four players in double-figures for digs, led by Joly who had 21.
Rio Grande's Aleah Pelphrey had 12 kills for the RedStorm who dropped to 10-4, 2-2 KIAC. Rio Grande had won its last five matches and its last two in a row in conference play.
It was a key conference matchup with Rio Grande entering the match in fifth place in the KIAC standings and IU Southeast right behind in sixth. But with the result of Friday's match, the teams traded places in the standings. IU Southeast improved to 4-1 on the road, second best in the KIAC.
The Grenadiers' Caitlynn Pfaadt had two service aces in the match, pushing her streak of consecutive matches with an ace to six.
The Grenadiers travel to KIAC newcomer West Virginia Tech Saturday for a tri-match with the Golden Bears and Appalachian Bible College. Rio Grande is at the Union (Ky.) College tri-match on Saturday.
