Asbury Men, Brescia Women claim KIAC Fall Preview Tournaments

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The Asbury (Ky.) University men and Brescia (Ky.) University women claimed the team titles at the KIAC Men's & Women's Golf Fall Preview Tournaments held this past weekend at Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky., and hosted by Midway (Ky.) University.

With all nine KIAC men's golf teams and six of the seven KIAC women's golf teams in attendance, the tournaments served as a preview of the KIAC championships this coming spring.

The Asbury men led from start to finish to claim the title on the men's side. The Eagles led by 13 shots after a team score of 309 in the first round Friday. Asbury shot 310 in the final round to stay in front and take home a nine-shot win over the rest of the field with a two-day total of 619 (+22).

WVU Tech claimed second place in the men's standings. The Golden Bears shot a 306 in the final round -- the best round of the tournament -- but Asbury's big lead after day one was too much. WVU Tech opened with a 322. Point Park placed third with rounds of 323 and 309, and Cincinnati Christian was one shot back in fourth place with rounds of 324 and 309.

Cincinnati Christian's Taylor Suggs won individual medalist honors after firing a tournament-best 69 in the final round. He opened with a 77 and claimed a one-shot win over Daniel Patterson of Asbury. Patterson shot 73-74. Asbury's Matthew McCurry was in third place with rounds of 75 and 74 to give the Eagles two of the top three finishers.

In the women's tournament, Brescia edged Asbury for the team title by five shots for the win. Asbury led by a single shot after a team score of 340 in the first round, but Brescia shot 346 in the final round compared to 352 for Asbury.

Midway placed third in the women's standings paced by individual medalist Kathryn Lawler, who shot rounds of 81 and 80 for a two-shot win. Brescia's Courntey Lucas (80-83) and Nicole Burks (82-82) placed second and third for the Bearcats.

Other top individuals had IU East's Breanna Nowak (84-84) placing fourth, and Asbury's Amanda Smith (83-88) and Sydney Moran (86-85) tying for fifth place.
