PITTSBURGH – Point Park University women's soccer earned its first conference championship with a 1-0 win over WVU Tech in the KIAC Tournament finals at Highmark Stadium on Saturday, securing a spot in the NAIA National Championship beginning Nov. 21 with the NAIA Opening Round.
Senior Louise Delaney scored the game-winning goal for the Pioneers (12-6-2, 6-2 KIAC) on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. The penalty kick was awarded as a result of a Point Park player being fouled in the box.
It was a defensive battle between the No. 2 seed Pioneers and the seed No. 4 Golden Bears (14-6, 5-3 KIAC), with the score tied 0-0 heading into halftime. Point Park out-shot WVU Tech 12-5 and held a 2-1 corner kick advantage.
Pioneers senior goalkeeper Erica Roney recorded her eighth shutout with three saves. WVU Tech's Martha Reyna made two saves in goal for the Golden Bears.
The Pioneers advance to the NAIA National Championship, which begins with the NAIA Opening Round at campus sites Nov. 21. The NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Selection Show is Nov. 16 at 12 p.m. ET on naianetwork.com.
