Brescia's Whitfill Sets Two New NAIA Basketball Records

Brescia Junior SG Julie Whitfill set a new NAIA Division II record on Saturday as she torched the nets for 14 three-pointers on her way to a school-record 51 points as the Lady Bearcats defeated Cincinnati Christian 92-79 in a KIAC matchup. The previous record for made 3-pt field goals was 13, held by Janet Gribnitz (Dallas [Texas] vs. Sul Ross State [Texas], 2/7/1993 [22 attempts]) and Lisa Benettieri (Teikyo Post [Conn.] vs. Southern Vermont, 11/20/1993 [24 attempts]).

The Breckenridge County (Ky.) native hit 8 three-pointers and scored 31 points in the first half, before nailing 5 more three-pointers and dropping 20 additional points in the second stanza. Whitfill's 31 attempts were also an NAIA Division II record, breaking the previous mark of 24, held by Lisa Benettieri (Teikyo Post [Conn.] vs. Southern Vermont, 11/20/1993).

For the week, Whitfill scored 95 points as her team went 3-0. She is currently second in the KIAC in scoring at 20.46 ppg and ranks in the top ten nationally in five different statistical categories. She is 2nd in the country in Free Throw Percentage (91.2%), 3rd in Total 3-Pt FG Made (86) and in 3-Pt FG Made per Game (3.58), 8th nationally in Scoring (20.46 ppg), and 9th in Total Points (491).
