Brescia, IU-Southeast collect tourney wins

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Third-seeded Indiana University-Southeast and No. 4 seed Brescia both earned opening round victories on Wednesday evening as the 2015 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament got underway at Hunter Wright Stadium.
IU-Southeast spotted No. 6 Asbury a two-run first inning lead before rolling to a 14-3 victory over the Eagles, while Brescia built a big early lead against fifth-seeded Alice Lloyd before hanging on late to post an 8-6 triumph.
Brescia (18-33) will face top-seeded Point Park (36-11) in Thursday's 10 a.m. opener, while IU-Southeast (34-16) will tangle with No. 2 seed Rio Grande (29-20) in the second winner's bracket semifinal at 1 p.m.
Asbury (10-35) will face the Point Park-Brescia loser in an elimination contest at 4 p.m., while Alice Lloyd (7-26) meets the IU-Southeast-Rio Grande loser in another elimination game at 7 p.m.
Wednesday night's tourney opener saw Brescia score twice in the first inning, four times in the third inning and twice in the fifth to open up an 8-0 lead.
Justin Cessna had an RBI single and Blake Smith had a sacrifice fly in the first, before Smith added a two-run double and Logan Rascoe and Josh Wetzel had RBI singles in the third for the Bearcats.
Aaron King had a two-run single for Brescia in the fifth.
Alice Lloyd made things interesting, though, by scoring twice in the fifth, once in the eighth and three times in the ninth inning.
Austin White got the plate with two outs in the home ninth representing the would-be tying run for the Eagles, but flied out to left field to end the game.
Christian McHatton had four hits to lead Brescia, while also allowing seven hits and two runs over seven innings to earn his fourth win in six decisions.
King, Cessna, Rascoe, Reed Rounder and Zach Capps all had two hits each in the win for the Bearcats.
Jake Bales had three hits and two RBI in the loss for Alice Lloyd, while White and Trae Minton had two hits each and Ryne Loggins drove in two runs for the Eagles.
Aaron Boling started and took the loss for ALC.
In the nightcap, Asbury got a run-scoring single from Andrew Moran and an RBI double from Dallas Murphy to take a 2-0 first inning lead, but IU-Southeast scored four times in the top of the third to take a lead it would never relinquish.
The Grenadiers banged out 24 hits, including a 6-for-6 effort by Josh Beams, who also scored twice and drove in two runs.
Logan Coughlin had three hits and drove in two runs, while Grant Anderson and Jarret Young both had three hits and a run batted in.
Marcus Howard and Tyler Adams both went 2-for-6 with two RBI, while Chris Kemp had two hits and a run batted in.
Jarrod Messex, the second of four pitchers for IU-S, earned his second win in three decisions.
Zach Settle (2-6) started and took the loss for Asbury. Moran finished with three hits in a losing cause, while Matt Cox and Murphy had two hits each.
