FLORENCE, Ky. -- University of Rio Grande freshman goalkeeper Benjamin Martinez was named the KIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday (Aug. 31). Martinez, a 6-0 native of Maurin, France, gave up just one goal in two games from Aug. 24-30.

Martinez is 3-0, and No. 5-ranked Rio Grande (3-0) has the same unbeaten record. He opened last week with a 4-0 win over St. Xavier (Ill.), his second shutout in as many outings at the time.

He followed that up with just one goal allowed in his 90 minutes of a 10-1 win over St. Francis (Ind.). Martinez has played all 270 minutes in goal for the RedStorm, and has a goals-against average of 0.333.

Rio Grande takes its 3-0 record to its Rio Grande Soccer Classic Sept. 4-5, which will include No. 8 Vanguard (Calif.), receiving-votes Point Park (Pa.) and Westmont (Calif.). Rio Grande will face Westmont on Sept. 4 and No. 8 Vanguard on Sept. 5.
