KIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Heitor de Melo (Rio Grande)
FLORENCE, Ky. – University of Rio Grande defender Heitor de Melo played a key role in two shutouts for the RedStorm defense and also scored two goals on the week. He was named the KIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday (Sept. 21).
A junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, de Melo scored what turned out to the be the game-winning goals in both of Rio Grande's games last week – a 2-0 victory over Bryan (Tenn.) and a 4-0 win over Point Park.
Those games were also shut outs for Rio Grande, which stayed unbeaten at 8-0 overall and were ranked No. 5 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll. Rio Grande has outscored its opponents, 35-5, this year.
