Brescia tops IU Southeast in KIAC Women's Basketball Game of the Week

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Brescia (Ky.) University used a big second half to beat IU Southeast, 77-69, in the KIAC Women's Basketball Game of the Week on Saturday (Jan. 16). The Bearcats outscored the Grenadiers, 45-31, over the final 20 minutes to turn a six-point, halftime deficit into an eight-point win.

The victory moves Brescia to 12-10 overall and 7-2 KIAC to remain in second place in the KIAC Capital Division, just a half game behind Asbury (Ky.) (7-1 KIAC). IU Southeast dropped to 7-9 overall, 4-3 KIAC.

Brescia won the Game of the Week for the second week in a row thanks to hitting on 6 of 11 3-pointers in the second half. They made 11 treys overall. Julie Whitfill recorded a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Kelsey Kirkpatrick added 14 points. Shelbi Samsil scored nine points on three big 3-pointers, and Catherine Dunn chipped in nine points as well.

For IU Southeast, Mary Dye had a monster game with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Jocelyn Mousty added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Annie Thomas had 11 points.

IU Southeast struggled offensively to open the game, and Bearcats took advantage to open an 11-4 advantage just four minutes into the contest. IU Southeast responded with a 7-2 run to keep the game close and trailed 19-15 at the end of the first quarter.

The Grenadiers played a great second quarter, outscoring the Bearcats, 23-13. They hit four three-pointers in the quarter and got big three-point shots from Baylee Krueger, Halea Petro and Josie Hockman which led to a 38-32 lead at halftime.

IU Southeast built a 42-34 lead early in the third quarter as Dye got a layup to fall off of a nice pass from Mousty, but Brescia responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game. There were four ties and four lead changes in the period alone.

In the fourth quarter, Brescia was able to put the game away with timely shooting from behind-the-arc. Samsil hit three big 3-point shots in the final period to help the Bearcats pull away.

The Grenadiers cut the lead to 69-65 with four minutes to play but Samsil hit a 3 to make it 72-65 and seal the win.

The Bearcat bench was a key to the win, outscoring IU Southeast 25-9. Also, Brescia outscored IU Southeast, 24-15, in the fourth quarter.

IU Southeast travels to Cincinnati Christian Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and the Bearcats host IU Kokomo at 6 p.m. ET.
