KIAC MBB Player of the Week: Ryan Atkins (WVU Tech)

FLORENCE, Ky. -- The KIAC's leading scorer Ryan Atkins of WVU Tech averaged 27.3 ppg in three conference wins last week to take home KIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for games Jan. 11-17.

Atkins is a 6-2, sophomore guard from Miami, Fla., who was the catalyst to WVU Tech's impressive 3-0 record in three conference road games last week. He averaged 27.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg and 4.3 apg as the Golden Bears won at Carlow on Tuesday, 76-73, at No. 20 Rio Grande on Thursday, 88-85, and at Ohio Christian on Saturday, 96-91, in double overtime.

The highlight was a career-high 38 points at Rio Grande, which came on 12 of 25 from the field and 14 of 15 from the foul line. He also had 31 points and eight rebounds in the double-OT win at Ohio Christian. The week started out with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists at Carlow.

With his big week, Atkins assumed the KIAC scoring lead at 22.7 ppg, a figure that ranks 11th in NAIA Division II. The big week had WVU Tech climb to second place in the KIAC Colonial Division at 13-6 overall and 5-1 KIAC. The Golden Bears host first-place IU East (6-0 KIAC) on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
