All-River States Conference Men's Soccer Teams & Individual Awards announced
FLORENCE, Ky. -- The 2016 All-River States Conference Men's Soccer Teams & Individual Awards were announced by the league office on Friday (Nov. 4) after voting from the nine RSC men's soccer head coaches was conducted this week.
The University of Rio Grande, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, dominated the individual awards and also tied for tops in the conference with five players named to the All-RSC Men's Soccer First Team. WVU Tech, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, tied with Rio Grande with five members of the 14-player first team.
The 14 players named to the All-RSC First Team included two goalkeepers, four defenders, four midfielders and four forwards. There were 15 players named to the All-RSC Second Team with an extra defender included.
Rio Grande's Pau Delgado Rodriguez is the RSC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year. The senior forward from Barcelona, Spain, led the conference with 2.41 points per game, ranked second with 41 points and tied for second with 17 goals.
Rio Grande's Heitor de Melo is the RSC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year. The senior defender from Sao Paulo, Brazil, started all 18 games for the RedStorm defense and led them to ranking fifth in the nation in goals against per game at 0.50 per game and 11 shutouts.
Rio Grande's Jorge Guinovart is the RSC Men's Soccer Player of the Year. The junior midfielder from Barcelona, Spain, tied for the RSC lead with 11 assists to place among the NAIA leaders and also managed to score 11 goals. He ranked fifth in the RSC with 33 points.
WVU Tech's Ignacio Tellechea is the RSC Men's Soccer Newcomer of the Year. The freshman midfielder from Madrid, Spain, led the RSC in total points with 42, ranked second with 2.33 points per game and tied for second with 17 goals.
Rio Grande's Scott Morrissey is the RSC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year. Morrissey. The 28th-year head coach has the RedStorm ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, ranked fourth in the nation in scoring at 4.22 goals per game and fifth in the nation in defense with 0.50 goals against per game.
The River States Conference Men's Soccer Champions of Character Team was also named with one player from each team chosen who best represents the five core character values of the NAIA's Champions of Character program, which are: respect, responsibility, intergrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
