IU Kokomo tops Midway in #RSCgotw Women's Basketball, ups record to 4-0 RSC

MIDWAY, Ky. -- In the River States Conference Women's Basketball Game of the Week, IU Kokomo continued its lead in the RSC West Division and improved to 4-0 RSC with a 64-58 win at Midway University on Saturday (Dec. 17).

IU Kokomo is now 9-4 on the year and has won six straight. Midway is 11-5 overall, 2-2 RSC as one of five teams that are tied for second place behind the first-place Cougars.

IU Kokomo scored the first two points of the game and led by as many as 12 en route to the victory.

Midway didn't help its cause as it shot just 34.9 percent from the floor going 22-of-63. They also struggled from long range where they connected on one triple in 14 attempts for 7.1 percent. IU Kokomo fared a bit better shooting 44.4 percent from the field (20-45) and 28.6 percent from the 3-point line where they went 2-of-7.

The difference in the game was at the charity stripe where the Cougars went to the line for 34 attempts making 22 (64.7 percent), while the Eagles toed the line for 16 attempts making 13 (81.3 percent).

After trailing by eight early on, the Eagles battled back to tie the game at 12 apiece, but it was the Cougars who took a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Eagles cut the deficit to two early in the second period, but IU Kokomo responded with seven unanswered taking a 28-19 lead midway through the period. The Cougars made the lead stand as they took a 36-29 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, Midway cut the lead to three on a layup by Timitryi Patterson, but once again the Cougars had an answer. They responded with a 9-0 run stretching their lead out to its largest of the game at 48-36.

IU Kokomo would continue to hold a steady lead throughout the final stanza as they led by 11, 58-47, with 1:28 remaining in regulation. The Eagles cut the deficit to three after an and-one by Patterson and a pair of freebies by Breanna Ball, but it was too little, too late as the Cougars walked away with the 64-58 win.

Whitney Williamson registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds for IU Kokomo. Dejianna Butler posted 21 points, going 8-11 from the field and 5-7 from the line. Butler also finished second on the team in rebounds with eight.Also posting double figures for IUK was Deja Felder with 14 points.

"I'm so happy with how well the team played today," said IU Kokomo coach Carlee Cottrell. "When Midway amped up the pressure, we were able to stay in control. We are making great strides as a team right now. Tomorrow we have to come in ready and focus so we can prepare for our Monday and Tuesday games before break."

The duo of Ball and Patterson led the way for the Midway. Ball finished with 15 points, while Patterson added 12. Rachel Carter and Patrice Tonge chipped in with eight apiece, while Carter pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Midway will play one final game before the Christmas holiday as they host Miami Middletown (Ohio) on Monday, December 19, at 2 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium.

IU Kokomo will remain on the road to faceoff against Goshen in a non-conference game on December 19 at 5:00 pm.​
