FLORENCE, Ky. -- The second installment of the River States Conference Women's Basketball Weekly Report (Dec. 9) brings you up to date on the early season standings with the RSC East and West Divisions and looks ahead to the weekend on tap. Look for this weekly feature at RiverStatesConference.com
RSC SCHEDULE HAS BEGUN
Last weekend was the first full slate of River States Conference women's basketball matchups with eight total conference games on the weekend. There are still four teams unbeaten in conference play after the first full weekend with Point Park (12-1, 2-0 RSC) and No. 17 IU East (7-3, 1-0 RSC) leading the RSC East Division and IU Kokomo (7-4, 3-0 RSC) and IU Southeast (7-2, 2-0 RSC) pacing the RSC West Division in the early going.
Point Park won both of its RSC home games last weekend over Rio Grande and WVU Tech, and IU East earned a victory over Ohio Christian to highlight the RSC East Division action. WVU Tech and Rio Grande are both 1-1 RSC and a game back in the divisional standings after splitting their games in Pittsburgh.
IU Kokomo ran its overall win streak to four with Tuesday's 56-55 win over Cincinnati Christian to improve to 3-0 RSC and first place in the RSC West Division. That win backed up the Cougars starting out last weekend with victories over (RV) Asbury and Alice Lloyd. IU Southeast also remains unbeaten in conference play at 2-0 RSC and 7-2 overall. Cincinnati Christian is a game back in the division at 2-1 RSC, which includes a win in the RSC Game of the Week over (RV) Asbury.
THE WEEKEND AHEAD
With final exams upcoming, there is just one conference matchup this weekend, but RSC women's basketball will be having many tests outside of the conference. The lone conference game is Brescia at Alice Lloyd (Sat., 1 p.m.), which is the RSC Game of the Week and features two teams trying to climb in the RSC West standings.
There are many matchups in the non-conference starting with Friday's games of Rio Grande hosting Wilberforce (6 p.m.) and Ohio Christian visiting Mt. Vernon Nazarene (6 p.m.). Saturday's slate has No. 5 Lindsey Wilson at IU Southeast (1 p.m.), No. 17 IU East versus Taylor (1 p.m.), Cincinnati Christian versus Mt. Vernon Nazarene (3 p.m.), Carlow at NCAA DII Malone (1 p.m.) and Midway at Kentucky Christian (2 p.m.). On Sunday, Brescia takes on No. 24 Pikeville (2 p.m.).
NEXT TOP 25 POLL
The next NAIA Division II Top 25 Poll will come out this coming Tuesday, Dec. 13. There was not a poll released last week as the NAIA has changed to a bi-weekly release of rankings. The first poll of the regular season Nov. 29 had No. 17 IU East and "receiving votes" Asbury from the RSC. With a full schedule of out-of-conference games on tap as mentioned above, conference teams will look to build their resumes toward the next ratings.
RSC TEAM STATS LEADERS
IU Southeast leads the RSC in scoring offense at 82.11 ppg, which is five more than the next conference team and ranks eighth in NAIA Division II. IU East is next in the conference at 77.20 ppg, and seven of the 13 conference members average above 70 ppg.
Point Park and Carlow rank first and second in the country in scoring defense and lead the conference in that category. Point Park holds opponents to 51.85 ppg followed by Carlow at 52.14 ppg.
Asbury leads the conference in field-goal percentage at .452, and the Eagles are 10th nationally in that category. There are five teams in the top 25 of national leaders in shooting with IU East 12th (.446), Rio Grande 18th (.437), Point Park 20th (.434) and IU Southeast 25th (.428).
WINNING WAYS
RSC women's basketball has 10 of its 13 members with overall records at or above .500 as the weekend starts. That includes all six teams in the RSC East Division and four of six in the RSC West. There are a few win streaks alive as well with Point Park (12-1) on a 10-game win streak, IU Kokomo (7-4) and IU Southeast (7-2) winners of four in a row and No. 17 IU East (7-3) with three straight.
