IU Southeast sweeps Rio Grande in KIAC Baseball Games of the Week
RIO GRANDE, Ohio – IU Southeast completed a four-game sweep at Rio Grande in the KIAC Baseball Games of the week with wins of 15-4 and 12-3 Saturday. The Grenadiers had opened the series with victories of 10-8 in eight innings and 5-3 on Friday.
The Grenadiers (17-10, 11-1 KIAC) started Saturday with an eight-run first inning in game one. IU Southeast scored eight runs on six singles, two walks, a hit by pitch and a balk. The Grenadiers sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.
IU Southeast would add three more runs in the second. Clay Benefield led off with a walk and scored as Tyler Adams followed with a triple to right-center. Kyle Goodman singled to bring in Adams and Goodman later scored on Trent Simpson's single.
IU Southeast scored in the first four innings of the game and led 11-1 after two innings.
Spencer Drake worked four innings to get his third win of the season. He gave up four runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Tyler Adams went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Clay Benefield, Logan Coughlin, Cody Maloon and Matt Volz each had two hits for IU Southeast. The Grenadiers pounded out 15 runs on 15 hits but had only two extra-base hits, a triple and a double each by Adams.
In game two, the Grenadiers led 4-1 after two innings. In the first, Logan Coughlin, hit an RBI single to score Jordan Branz. In the second, three-straight singles from Maloon, Goodman and Zach Reboulet scored Maloon. That was followed by a walk to Trent Simpson and a two-run single by Volz.
Kyle Asher hit his first home run of the year, a two-run shot to left in the fourth, to extend the IU Southeast lead to 8-3.
Ryne Underwood pitched a complete game to get the win. He gave up three runs on nine hits and struck out four.
The Grenadiers' third and four-hole hitters knocked in nine of the IU Southeast runs. Matt Volz went 3-for-4 with five RBI and Asher went 2-for-4 with four RBI.
IU Southeast oustcored the RedStorm 42-18 in the four-game series. The Grenadiers, with an 11-1 conference record, are off to their best start in conference play in head coach Ben Reel's tenure.
IU Southeast travels to Lindsey Wilson College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
