SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Representing the KIAC at the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship this week in Sioux City, Iowa, are KIAC Tournament champion Asbury (Ky.) University and KIAC runner-up Indiana University East. Both teams play first round games on Thusday, March 10. The 32-team national tournament gets underway March 9 at the Tyson Events Center.
Asbury (23-9) has drawn a No. 7 seed and will face No. 2 seed St. Francis (Ill.) in the first round on March 10 at 10:15 a.m. CT. St. Francis is 28-4 overall, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA Division II Top 25 Poll and is the runner-up from the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
IU East (22-10) is a No. 8 seed and plays No. 1 seed Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on March 10 at 3:30 p.m. CT. Olivet Nazarene, one of the four No. 1 seeds in the bracket, is 27-5 overall and is the champion of the CCAC Tournament.
Asbury is making its second straght appearance in the national tournament. The Eagles, who have won back-to-back KIAC Tournament championships, lost to No.5-ranked Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), 50-43, in the first round last year. Asbury was 16-2 KIAC for the best conference record in the KIAC this year.
IU East is in just its second year of women's basketball competition and has already reached the national tournament. With a roster of sophomores and freshmen, the Red Wolves were champions of the KIAC Colonial Divsion at 15-2 KIAC, and they clinched a spot in the national tournament when they reached the KIAC Tournament finals.
